Why Hollywood isn't good at Science Fiction
I have decided that Hollywood is unable to make truely good science fiction. They can do fantastic action movies with science fiction backdrops but they almost never do a science fiction movie. And after thinking about it I believe I understand why. The very nature of science fiction goes against the nature of a Hollywood movie studio. The problem is that Science fiction is about new ideas, about thinking about things in a new way.  I read science fiction because it comes up with things that I have never heard of before. What Hollywood studios want though is a proven formula. This is why we have 3000 different superhero movies in production. It's why we are going back to old movies. It's why every science fiction movie in existence is at its heart an action movie. To prove my point think about the truly innovative science fiction movies you have seen. The ones that did something completely different.  First off I suspect you're having trouble thinking of it. This in itself is sad because science fiction is supposed to be about new ideas. The ones I came up with were, Gattaca, Donny Darko and Primer. Two of these are independent movies and the third Gattaca had a budget of 36 million. Even in 1996 when this came out that was pretty tiny, so I suspect that was how they were able to make this movie. I see the same problem with the Syfy channel. They are afraid to try anything truly innovative because there is risk, and the longer the station exists the more it moves this way. They put wrestling on the station because it is save, they put reality TV on the station because it is safe. They put more Stargate on the station because it is safe. With as long as Syfy has existed why haven't they done a hour long show similar to the outer limits with a different science fiction story each week? So what is the solution. I think we are already seeing it. As the cost of special effects plummets more and more independent science fiction will appear and along with more web series and those will be willing to take risks because for shows with no budget and no big name actors the only thing left to do is to take risks and put out interesting ideas. Why is all of this important? Because we are in an age when change and technology are going to be the defining factors and the one type of media that can really deal with those ideas in a meaningful way is being relegated to gunfights with robots.

10 Movies to Watch Instantly on Netflix
If you own an Xbox, or a Tivo, or a Playstation, or a number of other devices and have Netflix you are aware of the instant watch but sometimes it's hard to find a good movie to watch. The movies available are often hit and miss and it can seem like everything they have is a b movie from the 1950's. Here are a few movies that are on instant watch you may not have seen, or may want to watch again. 10. King of Kong You don't have to like documentaries to like King of Kong. This is simply a well told story with a lot of drama and humor all centered around the game King Kong. It seems that getting to the kill screen on King Kong is considered one of the hardest feats in video games so when Steve Wiebe records himself doing so as well as with the all time high score no one believes him and he must go on a quest to prove he is the best in the world. Just trust me it's a really interesting and strange movie. 9. Heroes Season 1 There are a lot of interesting TV series on Netflix, but one of the more recent and best is heroes. If you've been interested in the show but don't want to start in the middle then you're in luck. Heroes has episodes all the way up to the third season. (You can skip the second season if you want there's not much you have to know from it) 8. The Animatrix If you loved the Matrix and hated it's sequels then you're the perfect candidate for the Animatrx. A series of Anima style cartoons about the Matrix these aren't all as good as the Matrix but none of them are as bad as revolutions. 7. Enchanted A typical Disney cartoon movie which is suddenly transported into real life New York. This is a fun fantasy that plays with everything you might expect to see in a Disney cartoon including singing animals, dashing princes and evil witches. 6. Unbreakable Superhero movies that aren't about known superheroes tend to go off the rails(no pun intended) because without the source material directors and writers begin to search for a way to make their story different without enough understanding of what comic books are. Unbreakable is similar in that it is different from most comic book movies but you can tell that M. Night Shyamalan has an understanding of comic books. 5, Stargate: Arc of Truth If you're a stargate fan and you haven't seen the Arc of Truth because you didn't want to pay for what amounts to a long episode of the series then watch Stargate Arc of Truth on instant watch. This is a fun story and likely one you haven't seen. 4.  Fido If you haven't seen this movie give it a chance. This is zombie movie in the tradition of manyRelax, it's not a Culkin good zombie movies in the sense that the zombies aren't the danger the humans are and this goes even farther with the troubles with the zombies already being largely solved before the beginning of the movie. There are some very, very disturbing things that happen in this movie but the idea of having a zombie as a pet is an interesting one as is the idyllic 1950's style world that it is set in. 3. Dr. Strangelove A required watch for the sci fi fan this is a very funny movie as well as one with a point. I don't fully agree with the point and it's not as relevant as it once was but the movie is still a masterpiece in many ways and if you haven't seen it this is your chance. 2. Gattaca Gattaca isn't the type of action packed action movie that people expect when they go to watch science fiction in the theater this is instead a movie about characters and ideas. I suspect that is why it's never done as well as I think it should. I am surprised by how many people have missed this film because it's not some obscure art piece. This has well known stars, an excellent story and some of the most important ideas ever explored in a science fiction movie because they not only might happen I suspect they are beginning to happen. 1.  Serenity If you haven't seen this movie you need to and if you have you need to again. This isn't just because it's a Joss Whedon movie or because firefly was a fantastic TV show. You don't need to know any of that coming into it. What you do need to know is that this is a great movie with great action sequences, fun characters and some interesting twists and overall was just a fantastic movie.
